Agassiz is a triangular area between Porter Square and Harvard Square defined by Kirkland Street to the east, Massachusetts Avenue to the west, and the Cambridge-Somerville to the north, the latter running close to and nearly parallel with Beacon Street. Both Harvard University and Lesley University have a strong presence in the neighborhood. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is also found here, near the residential area known as Shady Hill Square. Restaurants and cafes as well as shops and services are found along Mass. Ave. between Porter Square and Harvard Square. There are also a few establishments on Beacon Street.
The housing stock in the Agassiz neighborhood is largely a mix of single families, multi-families and small condo associations, many of which are multi-family conversions. Oxford Street runs through the middle of the neighborhood and many Harvard and Lesley buildings are located on Oxford. The famous chef Julia Child and her husband Paul lived in Agassiz from 1961 to 2001 at 103 Irving Street.
